About The Nia Experience

An exhilarating cardio workout that is designed for sustainability of the body, Nia offers increased stability, mobility, flexibility, agility and strength and does so through the blending of nine different movement forms.  Nia  borrows from the martial arts, the dance arts and the healing arts and  offers a variety of  movement styles, speeds and energies to choose from.

What is Nia?

Nia is a sensory-based movement practice that draws from martial arts, dance arts and healing arts. It empowers people of all shapes and sizes by connecting the body, mind, emotions and spirit. Classes are taken barefoot to soul-stirring music in more than 45 countries. Trainings teach people how to get in their body, learn about The Body’s Way and cultivate body-centered awareness. Every experience can be adapted to individual needs and abilities. Step into your own joyful journey with Nia, and positively shape the way you feel, look, think and live.

What is Nia’s purpose?

Nia’s purpose is to grow a worldwide community of healthy people who are empowered to do great things. We believe every person can discover, explore, unleash and enhance their individual potential to live a fulfilling and meaningful life – by engaging their senses and listening to their bodies. With the right tools and education we can increase our confidence and happiness. We can become connected to others to shape a consciousness that extends beyond our own.

As a student you are able to choose which energy to use in each moment depending on sensations in your body /mind and thus you become a CPT or Conscious Personal Trainer of your own workout. This is how we honor the body in each moment. At times we have all experienced not feeling ‘up’ for our usual workout and with the ability to choose the level you work out at you are able to create the right ‘shift’ in your energy body through sensations and listening to the voices of your body and  sensing what it needs to maintain, develop and heal.

The Nia experience is both exhilarating and healing and many testimonials can be found on the Nia headquarters website, www.nianow.com. Typically Nia classes include 55 minutes of movement to diverse music. Every Nia class has 7 Cycles beginning with a focus and intent. Every class offers a unique combination of a variety of the 52 moves that make up the foundation of Nia. These 52 Moves correspond with the main areas of the body: base, core and upper extremities. Stiff beginners and highly fit athletes alike can adapt Nia to meet their needs by choosing from three intensity levels.

How does Nia work?

Nia has 52 moves that optimize the body’s natural design. Nia choreography is body-centered and allows practitioners to connect to nine diverse movement styles from 3 different art forms: Tai Chi, Tae Kwon Do, Aikido from the Martial Arts, Jazz dance, Modern dance, Duncan dance from the Dance Arts and  Yoga, Alexander Technique and Teachings of Moshe Feldenkrais from the Healing Arts. Nia classes balance form with freedom encouraging people to personalize the movements making choices for pleasure and comfort.

” Nia really captures the spirit of ‘dance like no one is watching’…It is a great program. It’s fun, the music is great, it’s individualized for whatever level of movement, ability and coordination you do or don’t have.  The hour flies by and when I’m finished each class I feel like I’ve moved my body in so many different and wonderful ways.  I always feel rejuvenated physically and mentally after my Nia class”…      Joanne Tompkins
